Sound Therapy Tinnitus Products
Sound therapy products usually generate a sound that is soothing, and stimulates a wide range of our hearing. Sound therapy products may produce "white noise", sounds of nature, or "fractal tones". Some can be worn, some are based on CDs or MP3 Players, and some are bedside or table-top in design.
How Sound Therapy Tinnitus Products Work
Sound therapy comes from our understanding of how the inner ear and the brain interacts with sound, and our knowledge that tinnitus is more perceptible when there's no ambient sound.
Some experts have pointed out that our ancestors were always surrounded with sound – the babbling brook, birdsong, the rustle of leaves – and if things suddenly became very quiet, it was usually because there was a predator about to strike! So for our ancestors, silence meant 'go onto high alert'. And when we're on high alert, we become far more aware of our senses – and more likely to pick up sounds we don't normally notice… like our brain activity in the part that deals with sound. Is it possible that this is an overhang from our ancestors?
So sound therapy basically involves 'avoiding silence', usually with a non-intrusive sound that we don't have to pay attention to. They can be used during the day or particularly at night time, when tinnitus is often more noticeable.
